Raffles PlaceThough many Singaporeans have made exaggerated (and sometimes xenophobic) complaints about companies here refusing to hire locals, it seems that some of their grievances turn out to be quite true.   The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has identified 38 firms that have not been doing enough to hire and groom Singaporeans, and could even be banned from hiring foreign professionals should they refuse to cooperate, according to ministry head Lim Swee Say on his blog. "Being placed on the watchlist means that MOM will scrutinise their Employment Pass applications more closely," he wrote. "They will be asked to provide additional details, such as the number of Singaporeans who applied and were interviewed for the posts, and whether their existing Singaporean employees have been considered." Additionally, MOM will also be taking steps to ensure the firms will step up their efforts in training, developing and upgrading local professionals, managers and executives (PMEs). Those who face shortage of qualified Singaporeans in some specific areas will be encouraged to transfer their knowledge and skills from foreign PMEs to their Singaporean staff as well. "Working together, we can help companies to grow their businesses and Singaporeans to grow their careers, in a win-win partnership."
