She was a student's dream come true — a licensed medical practitioner who issued medical certificates (MCs) freely without question.
However, all good things must come to an end. Registered traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) physician and acupuncturist Cheong Thiam Mui has since been suspended by the TCM practitioners board after investigations revealed that her issuance of MCs had been "very liberal".
According to the Board, her conduct was only found out when a complaint was made to them, TODAY reports. On top of issuing as many as 122 MCs to 109 students of a private school without adequate examination, she did not keep the appropriate records of medical conditions, diagnosis, treatment and grounds for issuing them.
Her penalty involves a three-month suspension and a fine of $2,000, as well as an order to pay the costs and expenses of the investigation. Cheong will also have to give a written undertaking that she won't be issuing MCs without proper TCM examination of her patients, and that she'll stay true to the ethical code and relevant regulations. Looks like malingering students will just have to find someone else.
