The death toll from severe flooding across Myanmar has topped 100, with nearly one million people affected as fears intensify for the country's crucial rice bowl region.
It's time to lend a helping hand, people!
Floods from a heavy monsoon season have cut through swathes of South and Southeast Asia in recent weeks, claiming hundreds of lives and displacing millions.
Four regions have been designated disaster zones, with the cyclone-battered western state of Rakhine particularly hard hit.
International aid has been stepped up in recent days following an official government request for help.
Here in Singapore, Red Cross has launched a month-long appeal for funds.
"We are launching an appeal for funds to aid communities affected by the floods in Myanmar, following needs assessment from our advance team, which was on ground from 6 to 8 August," the organisation announced on Facebook today."Our advance team indicated that relief items such as hygiene packs, water and food in these shelters were in short supply due to the unforeseen influx of affected villagers. We also have plans to deploy medical relief to Myanmar in anticipation of the spike in medical needs. During floods, the incidence of waterborne diseases and medical conditions like diarrhoea and fever are expected to rise."
Here is how to donate to Singapore Red Cross:
· Walk-in cash donations: Go to Red Cross House (15 Penang Lane), Mon-Fri 9am-6pm.
· Cheque: Make it payable to ‘Singapore Red Cross Society’. On the back of the cheque, indicate ‘Myanmar Flood 2015 Relief Fund’, donor’s name, contact number and address, and post it to the above address.
