Sembawang Bus Stop | Dickson PhuaUp next, nerd news. The Land Transport Authority got an award for a data analytics programme called Planet — Planning for Land Transport Network — at the annual gathering called Esri User Conference in California this week. Planet uses GIS — Geographic Information System — to map the size of the crowds at bus stops. That informs the decision of bus operators to deploy public transport either ahead or behind schedule. It has reportedly led to a 60 percent reduction in crowded bus services, according to Channel NewsAsia.  “It also helped them [LTA] achieve a reduction in average waiting time by three to seven minutes despite an annual increase in average daily bus ridership of 100,000,”  said Thomas Pramotedham, CEO of Esri Singapore, in the CNA report. While we get how Planet can identify crowded bus stops in the city, we wonder how the operators decide on which bus services to send? If you know the answer, do tweet us at @coconutsSG.
