Pon the floorA heinous act of disrespect has been committed against the very virtues of our great nation, and it was carried out under the supervision of a politician in power, no less.  Merlions swimming across the oceans of the Singapore straits wept tears of unrelenting sorrow when it was revealed that Sengkang West grassroots leaders and other volunteers stabbed a cold knife into the throbbing heart of the nation when they placed 70 Singapore flags on the ground. Such barbarism!  In an effort to set up a humungous display celebrating the nation's jubilee, Minister of State for Health and Member of Parliament for Sengkang West Single Member Constituency Dr. Lam Pin Min called upon a group of volunteers to form up Singapore flags into a big-ass '50' sign. In the process however, the flags were indisputably soiled when it was laid on the ground and scrunched up amongst the shrubbery.  All this was done despite the fact that they breached several edicts decreed by the powers that be in the Singapore Arms and Flag and National Anthem Rules: - No person in possession of the Flag shall allow or cause the Flag to touch the floor or ground, even when lowering the Flag from a staff or flagpole. - No person shall treat the Flag with disrespect. - When the Flag is hung — (a) the Flag shall be hung against a vertical wall or other vertical flat surface; and (b) the crescent and stars shall be on the top left position as seen by any spectator facing the Flag and the wall or surface, as the case may be. - No person shall display, or cause to be displayed, any Flag that is damaged or not in a proper and clean condition. Anyone found contravening the rules shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $1,000. What has world come to these days? Our patriotic hearts have taken a gratuitous incision to its flag-saluting arteries and not even a grand convoy of combat and emergency vehicles can suture our lethal wounds.  Photos: Lam Pin Min Facebook page
