Driven by desperation, a man believed to be a drug offender thought nothing of climbing down from his seventh-floor HDB unit and entering windows of his neighbours in an attempt to escape from the police.
The 41-year-old man first broke into a house underneath his at Block 431B along Yishun Avenue 1, and held the occupants captive for 20 excruciating minutes yesterday evening, The New Paper reported. Silently entering the house through the master bedroom window, he ordered a mother and her three children to keep quiet as he plotted an escape while police officers started knocking at the door.
The mother — 33-year-old Suhadah Jumadi — then told him to escape through the kitchen window, but was not able to find the keys to the window grilles. The increasingly agitated man then broke the grilles and climbed out, saying "God bless you" before leaving.
From the unit, he climbed down to the third storey and entered the house of 46-year-old Tan Cheng Hoon through the kitchen window. The intruder then followed Tan to his room and pleaded with him not to let the police in, who came knocking at the front door. Even though Tan felt that he was a nice man, he didn't want to commit an offence and opened the door.
The officers rushed into the house with tasers drawn and police shields up. They found him hiding in a cupboard in Tan's parents' room, before dragging him to the living room where paramedics gave him a quick medical check-up. He was taken away by the police, leaving Tan confused by the whole turn of events and Suhadah completely traumatised by the incident.
