Following the worst train disruption in Singapore's history, which affected nearly 250,000 commuters, SMRT has just announced measures to prevent the incident from happening again.
Having ruled out a defective train as the likely cause of the power fault, SMRT had said the breakdown was caused by multiple power trips detected on both lines, but the root cause has yet to be identified.
According to Channel NewsAsia, SMRT on Friday said that long-term track upgrade and renewal programmes will be rescheduled as necessary, so that priority for track access can be given to immediate remedial actions during limited nighttime maintenance hours in order to safeguard the system.
The transport operator also said it will continue investigations through the weekend and is currently working with external experts to review the robustness of the power network and will find ways to segment it further to avoid a similar system-wide power failure.
With breakdowns happening so frequently, the worst in the nation's history just happening on Tuesday, SMRT should also come up with a survival guide on how to deal with future breakdowns.
