Being an irreconcilable prick really doesn't pay, as Dutch national Dino Petrus Johannes van Deijzen learned yesterday when his three-week jail sentence for beating up a taxi driver was increased to three months.
Last October, the 34-year-old design executive had been heavily intoxicated and alighted a cab with his girlfriend, stumbling away without paying. 42-year-old cabbie Ee Kah Ling asked him to settle the fare as well as his girlfriend's vomit in the taxi, before threatening to call the police. As Ling went to retrieve his mobile phone, van Deijzen carried out a violent assault on the cabby, who had to be taken to hospital for treatment.
Originally, van Deijzen only received a sentence of three weeks in jail, but his apparent asshole vibes didn't bode well with the judge. According to The Straits Times, Justice Tay Yong Kwang noted that there was a clear absence of any apology, remorse or attempt to compensate Ee for his troubles.
van Deijzen also portrayed himself as the victim, claiming that the taxi driver had thrown a retaliatory punch that knocked him unconscious — which the judge noted to be a lame excuse for his acts of violence. It was also revealed that the Dutch national had gone to the doctor days after the incident, claiming that he was beaten up by a cabby and had his valuables taken from him.
The High Court was convinced that the original sentence for the supreme jackass was much too lenient, and righteously meted out a much longer jail sentence for him to sit and reflect upon himself.
