Whizzing around without rules: E-scooterists push for safety regulations

With the rise of scooting enthusiasts in Singapore, e-scooter community Big Wheels Scooters Singapore is pushing for road rules to be quickly implemented to ensure the safety of all. The group's concerns about safe scooting are not unwarranted as there has been a recent slew of accidents involving pedestrians, including children, being knocked down by irresponsible scooterists who have taken to the road despite it being illegal, reports Channel NewsAsia. Powerful scooters which can travel faster than the speed of light have also appeared on the market to attract speed demons, while poorly made or modified scooters pose fire hazards. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced earlier this year that it will establish the Active Mobility Unity with the aim of creating a set of rules and norms for the use of bicycles and other personal mobility devices such as electric kick scooters in shared spaces. A public consultation exercise will be held in July to gather public feedback on the use of these devices. Member of Parliament Lim Biow Chuan, a member of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Transport, pointed out that enforcement could be an issue even if legislation is implemented, due to the lack of resources devoted to enforce the rules. Scooterists should also take it upon themselves to be responsible or e-scooters will be banned before they can even utter "oh, scoot!". Photo: Jim.henderson via Wikimedia Commons   Done reading?
