Shocking the patients and staff, gunshots rang throughout Khoo Teck Puat hospital yesterday evening as a suspect grabbed an officer's revolver and squeezed out three shots at a policeman.
The 31-year-old officer had been escorting a 24-year-old Singaporean man at the hospital in Yishun after the suspect was arrested earlier and complained of chest pain and asthma, according to various media reports.
According to the Singapore Police Force (SPF), when the officer's colleague stepped out of a private room they were in, the suspect attempted to escape and got into a struggle with his handler. He managed to get his hands on the officer's baton and used it to beat the latter to the ground before grabbing his revolver and shot the policeman in the hand and foot.
The suspect was swiftly shut down and brought under control, sustaining superficial injuries. The wounded officer was in stable condition, and got conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital as he required immediate hand micro surgery, and there was a hand surgeon ready at Tan Tock Seng.
At a grassroots events this morning Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean noted that police investigations into the incident were ongoing. The SPF assured that members of the public were never in any danger during the incident.
