Malaysian authorities are stepping up the hunt for errant Singaporean motorists who have not settled their traffic fines, and a recent three-day operation along roads in Johor Baru stopped 5,000 Singapore-registered vehicles for checks.  A total of 240 Malaysian traffic police officers were mobilised in the operation which began last Friday, The New Paper reports. Singapore-registered vehicles had to stop at road blocks which were set up at three locations — the Eastern Dispersal link highway, the Second Link Bridge and a main road from Kota Tinggi to Johor Baru.  The operation was a success for the Malaysian authorities, who managed to acquire a total of 4,201 paid fines, constituting 8 percent of the total outstanding sum (an estimated RM75 million) owed in unpaid fines issued.  Most of the unpaid fines accumulated over the years were for speeding and beating red lights. Relatively minor infractions, but once you multiply that by 518,510 in unsettled traffic summonses, it really amounts to a lot. Photo: Sham Hardy via Flickr
