The skies above Queen Street swirled with thick fumes of smoke yesterday afternoon when fire broke out at the crowded Albert Centre Market and Food Centre.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) were alerted to the fire around 4.20pm, dispatching two fire engines, two Red Rhinos, four support vehicles and one ambulance to the scene. It was found that a 20m section of the centre's exhaust duct caught fire, and firefighters managed to put the blaze under control within 15 minutes, The New Paper reports. The fire was totally extinguished in 45 minutes using two water jets.
30 people were evacuated from the upper storey of the food centre, while others had cleared out before SCDF's arrival. None were hurt during the fire.
