No selfies and wefies onstage during graduation ceremonies please: NUS and NTUIn the age of selfies, wefies and whatever the heck these young kids will think of next, it's only inevitable that the modern phenomenon has infiltrated the stages of academia, and even more inevitable that it's being frowned upon.  According to The Straits Times, the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the National University of Singapore (NUS) are discouraging their students from whipping out their phones and grab quick self portraits on stage during graduation ceremonies.  Both institutions have started to pull out their ban hammers over selfies as it would not only be inappropriate, but also cause the ceremonies to drag on.  Let's say one selfie takes at most a couple of seconds. Multiply that with the hundreds of students and adding the duration taken for the fumbling ones, it would probably extend the ceremony to another hour or so. Not to mention that selfies are pretty unbefitting of formal, distinguished events.  NUS has already put up an online advisory on appropriate etiquette when collecting a degree, reminding students to only limit their interaction with the presiding officer with a handshake and a smile. Over at NTU, ushers will remind students before that collect their scrolls not to disrupt each session by taking self-admiring pictures on stage.  It's also a little baffling why they'd want to take selfies and wefies on stage anyway — aren't professional photographers on hand to take free pictures? Kids these days... Photo: Alan Light via Flickr
