Indian Heritage Centre opens in Little India as Singapore's first museum dedicated to Indian historyHonestly, what took them so long? The Indian Heritage Centre was just opened yesterday to pay tribute to the Indian community of Singapore.  The $21 million centre was launched by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong yesterday in the heart of Little India along Campbell Lane, Channel NewsAsia reports. The Indian Heritage Centre is said to be the first museum in Southeast Asia to focus on the diverse heritage of the Indian community.  The centre itself is said to blend both traditional Indian as well as modern architectural elements, with its facade inspired by the iconic stepwells commonly found in historic Indian structures.  The galleries in the Indian Heritage Centre revolve around the history of how South Asians came to arrive in Southeast Asia, with exhibits showcasing their origins and migration during the pre-colonial and colonial periods, as well as the pioneering Indians in the Straits Settlements and their subsequent social and political awakening. The post-war contributions of Indian to the rise of modern Singapore are also on display, complete with artefacts, interviews, photo albums and other ephemera from the personal collections of pioneers.  More information about the Indian Heritage Centre can be found on their official website.  Photo: Indian Heritage Centre website
