Oh the things that people do when they get high. In a drug-induced haze, a man waited until his friend fell asleep, stole his car and lead the police on a merry chase across the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE), despite not having a driving licence. Fun times.
29-year-old Muhammad Umair Md Nasir was sentenced to five and a half years in jail as well as three strokes of the cane for his little stunt, The New Paper reports. He was also banned from driving for a year and fined a total of $3,200 yesterday after admitting to seven charges.
He would have gone scot free (and probably get himself into an accident) if a traffic police didn't stop him while he was going on an early morning joyride along Whitley Road in May last year. Umair ignored the cop's order to stop his vehicle for a spot check, and soon he was speeding along the PIE with the police in pursuit.
During the chase, the emboldened and clearly high Umair drove in a zigzag manner, abruptly changing lanes and cutting in front of a few motorists — thankfully none were hurt. He was eventually stopped along Mount Pleasant Road.
This would not be his first brush with the law. Umair has previous convictions for theft, causing hurt, unlawful assembly, possession of offensive weapons and drugs.
