Smoked tofu does not trigger gout, says NUS studyTerrific news for people suffering from gout — it's okay to eat high-protein foods like tofu and peanuts after all! Happy? Raise your right hand (if you can). A study conducted by the National University of Singapore "found that eating soy products like tofu did not increase uric acid levels. And contrary to popular belief, there is no harm in eating plant-based proteins," reports Channel NewsAsia. The NUS study involved 63,000 Chinese adults in Singapore above the age of 40. "We can now tell our patients or people with high uric acid levels that there is no need to control or restrict the intake of soy food, legumes, nuts and seeds products,” says Dr Teng Gim Gee, senior consultant at National University Hospital's rheumatology division.  Meat, however, is still on the list of things to avoid if you don't want to be tortured by that burning sensation that wakes you up in the middle of the night.
