'Sitting' by Kamin Lertchaiprasert
Find your way to enlightenment in Thai artist Kamin Lertchaiprasert’s installation, Sitting, at the Singapore Art Museum.
The work consists of 366 carved wooden sculptures of sitting, meditative figures, carved over the course of a single year (the number of figures references the total number of days in a leap year).
Each of the figures is placed on one of three ascending platforms, with the figures on the highest platform representing those who are closest to enlightenment.
Lertchaiprasert believes that sitting and stillness are paths to an inner utopia, as one orients oneself to within, instead of to the external world — each of his miniature sculptures are shown in the midst of their quest towards this meditative stillness. Kim Tay
