BB-8 it's not, but it's the closest (and cutest thing) we can get when the 28th SEA Games take place from June 5 to 16.
This little buddy is a 1:5 scale version of the Volvo XC90, and it'll be zipping around the field during the athletics events to collect javelins, hammers and discuses from the field of play and return them back to the starting line, Channel NewsAsia reports.
Other than being disarmingly cute, it's said to be enhancing the time efficiency of the games, as the athletes won't need to wait so long to wait for the throwing area to be cleared before their next attempt.
Additional features on the car such as special brackets with clips and padded holding areas will help keep the javelins, hammers and discuses in place. Mini RC cars have actually been in use as errand boys before in field sports events including the Beijing Summer Olympics in 2008 and the London Olympics in 2012. Check out how they work in the clip below.
These bad boys who'll be present in the upcoming SEA Games are capable of reaching speeds of up to 100km/h, and will be operated by trained volunteers, including RC hobbyists.
