In the increasingly gentrified neighbourhood of Tiong Bahru, a taste of homely comfort food is always welcome — and what better than Nonya cuisine to satiate that appetite for unpretentious fare with the newly established House of Peranakan Petit along Eng Hoon Street.
As the latest addition to the House of Peranakan Group of restaurants, expect nothing less than their trademark intimate, rustic setting with decor that screams Peranakan heritage. Think wooden, traditional furniture and lots of warm lighting — all of which harks back to the former Peranakan enclave in Tiong Bahru's Eng Hoon Street.
Lunchtime is when the restaurant gets really lively and considerably packed in the 30-seater establishment. Their signature dishes proved to be the most popular, with dishes such as Ngoh Hiang ($12), Long Beans Sambal ($12) and Otak Otak ($12) just flying from the kitchen and onto the tables. The Ngoh Hiang is a special highlight in their appetiser menu — crispy with every bite as the mixture of minced pork and prawns tumble out in moist chunks.
The mains are where the Nonya taste really shine, where the distinct spices and that tangy, aromatic yet spicy flavour simply pops out; unsurprising since House of Peranakan have been at it since 1985. Expect nothing less than a traditional titillation as trademark dishes such as their Assam Prawns ($18), Scallop Lemak ($28), Ayam Buah Keluak ($18) and Itek Sioh ($18) simply beg to be shared and appreciated with friends.
The rich meal doesn't stop there as their dessert menu offers even more traditional fare. Dig into their Durian Chendol with Coconut Ice Cream ($8.50) or even their Gula Melaka Sago Pudding with Coconut Ice Cream ($6.50) to wash it all down.
House of Peranakan Petit is indeed the place to go for a solid, gimmick-less meal that is both comforting and contemporary in taste. Drop by before the peak hours though, because it gets full-house real fast daily.
House of Peranakan Petit is at 42 Eng Hoon Street (Tiong Bahru Estate), +65 9647-6106. Open daily 12pm–3pm, 6pm–10pm.
