A mission to conquer Mount Everest to represent Singapore has been cancelled following the deadly earthquake that struck Nepal last week.
Three members of the Aluminaid Team Singapura 2015 who had been attempting to plant the Singapore flag on the world's highest mountain have decided to return home, The Straits Times reports.
Teacher Yusrina Yaakob, 28, and two Singapore Civil Defence Force officers — 36-year-old Ismail Latiff and his 42-year-old brother Zulkifli Latiff — will be descending from the mountain's base camp. A fourth member of the team, economics graduate Seumas Yeo, sustained an injury prior to the earthquake and was evacuated from Kathmandu on Apr 27.
Understandably, the mission —which took five years of training — has been cancelled, especially considering that 17 people died on Mount Everest due to avalanches which were triggered by the 7.8-magnitude earthquake and its aftershocks.
The 89 Singaporeans and permanent residents who were evacuated from Nepal safely arrived home this morning, while 10 are still listed as missing.
