A Singaporean woman has received a whopping fine of $34,500 for multiple offences relating to her Indonesian domestic worker.
39-year-old Tang Lee Sung was convicted of 19 counts for failing to pay $5,778 in wages to her domestic helper within seven days after the last day of each monthly salary period that lasted from November 2011 to May 2013. The Indonesian worker was supposed to be paid $420 each month.
Aside from defaulting on the salaries, Tang also deployed her domestic worker to work in another place other than the residential address stated in her work permit card — she was sent to Johor Bahru to take care of Tang's mother's cats at a rented house in a nearly daily basis.
Tang and her mother informed the court that they had refused to pay the salaries at the end of her employment as they felt dissatisfied with the domestic worker's performance, alleging that she caused damage to their properties and mistreated the cats.
The District Judge found no grounds to their excuses and found Tang guilty, convicting her of all 19 charges of defaulting in salary payments and one charge of illegal deployment. She was also ordered to make good the entire salary arrears due to the Indonesian worker.
