Fan Bingbing's original production The Empress Of China will be screening here on StarHub cable, but viewers won't be able to feast their eyes on Tang Dynasty-era cleavage because Chinese censors weren't too happy with the overt display of bosoms.
The Tang Dynasty epic, starring leading lady and producer Fan Bingbing as China's only empress faced re-edits by Chinese censors as all cleavage-baring scenes were removed, The Straits Times reports.
Chinese netizens were obviously outraged that they won't be seeing the women of The Empress of China in all their sensual glory. The version screened in China features tightly-cropped shots of the actresses, leaving only their heads and shoulders on screen (sans bosom).
Singapore and Hong Kong however will be getting a full view of their outfits, but it'll still be a little censored. Cleavages will be covered up with digitally added pieces of fabric. Only Taiwan has aired the series in its original form so far.
The stars of the show have maintained that they costumes were in line with the era's fashion sense — women in the Tang Dynasty really did wear low-cut outfits.
