Hold on to your high fidelity vinyl lovers — Record Store Day descends upon the world tomorrow in a whole day to considerably thin out your wallets and bank accounts.
Returning to the various independent record stores across the island, tomorrow promises a whole day of sweet tunes both on wax and IRL, with live music performances and exclusive LP releases galore. Here're five spots in Singapore to look out for to celebrate Record Store Day:
Vinylicious Records
This bastion of all things vinyl has been one of the must-visit establishments every Record Store Day with a wide range of records both classic and modern, and according to their Facebook page, their stock just arrived yesterday. RSD specials include tunes by Frank Sinatra, Mastodon, Echosmith, Metallica and more. Not interested in the exclusives? Don't fret — they're having a sale too with 10 percent off new titles and 40 percent off used ones. More details on their Facebook page.
Hear Records
Not to be outdone, Hear Records also have a solid lineup of both RSD exclusives and live performances in the cosy confines of the store in a celebration of the music spirit. Homegrown talents such as folk outfit Hanging Up The Moon and instrumental veterans I Am David Sparkle will be launching their various releases tomorrow at the store, while soulful synth-rock quintet Riot !n Magenta will be performing live at 5pm. Aside from the RSD-exclusive titles, they even have cassettes from the '80s and '90s if you're into memoribilia. More details on the Hear Records Facebook page.
Red Point Record Warehouse
This spot may be a little off the beaten track and a pretty hard to find (located in a factory building along Playfair Road) but when you do get there, it's vinyl heaven. Offering a very, very expansive list of old titles, RSD at Red Point is not about exclusives, but about the pure affordability of it all. Their wall of disco/dance music from the 1980s to the 2000s will be sold at $10 for 3 items — and the best part is that the offer will be valid till December. Dayum. Check out the Red Point Record Warehouse Facebook page for more info.
#vinyloftheday Presents: A Side B Side
Analog auteurs #vinyloftheday have always been stalwarts of wax, and they're celebrating RSD with a party at the offices of music streaming service Rdio tomorrow night. Bring your own records and swap them with fellow attendees, and catch a documentary screening at 5.30pm. Later on, experience the progressive instrumental might of In Each Hand A Cutlass live, and party on with the likes of DJs Kurt, Eden, KidG, Daniel Peters and Darren Dubwise spinning on decks. Stay updated on their Facebook event page.
2Fingers
Looking for something more chill and substantially lepak? Get down to TAPOW bar at Ann Siang for 2Fingers, jointly organized by Heliotropika and Straits Records. Featuring an acoustic set by local comic rockers The Zozi and DJ sets by Mark Cheng, Bastard, Wan V, Sham Em and Astrokitsch. Entry is free with voluntary vinyl or CD blind swaps at the door. RSVP over at their Facebook event page.
