SMRT wants in on the telecommunications pie, teams up with OMGTEL to be 4th telcoWhat's a nationwide public transport operator doing entering the telco game? Apparently, SMRT are teaming up with OMGTEL to big for Singapore's fourth wireless telecommunications carrier licence.  Both companies will be collaborating on the provision of goods and services and will leverage on SMRT's already extensive media presence and commuter reach, Channel NewsAsia reports. OMGTEL — a company under local tech firm Consistel — had announced its intentions to be Singapore's fourth telco last October. SMRT was offered the opportunity to be a major shareholder in OMGTEL, and an advisory board has even been established which includes the likes of former Foreign Affairs Minister George Yeo, former Commissioner of Singapore Police Force Khoo Boon Hui and former deputy CEO of the Media Development Authority Michael Yap.  With such a partnership, it looks to be that they'll be a force to reckon with as they will be going head to head with broadband provider MyRepublic, who also announced their intentions to become the country's fourth telco.  Photo: alantankenghoe via Flickr
