A rescue attempt met a tragic end when a 59-year-old man died after allegedly stabbing himself to death as officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) forced their way into his flat.
He had locked himself in his flat on Marine Drive for nearly four hours yesterday afternoon, The New Paper reports, and was seen speaking to officers from behind his locked gate. He refused to let them in and threatened to harm himself.
SCDF was called in to conduct rescue operations, and they sent a fire engine, a light fire attack vehicle, two fire bikes, three support vehicles and an ambulance. Two inflatable safety life air packs were set up at the bottom of the block as a precautionary measure.
However, when the officers managed to enter the flat — by rappelling into the kitchen window and cutting the lock at the front door — he was found alone lying on the floor, without any pulse.
Police reported the man to have suffered self-inflicted stab wounds, with a deep cut above his eye.
SCDF officers performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him all the way to the hospital.
The case has been classified as an unnatural death; investigations are ongoing.
