A 38-year-old Singaporean man issued a composition fine of $5,000 for illegally importing reptiles into Singapore from Malaysia.
A bearded dragon and an iguana was detected in the spare tyre compartment of his vehicle on Mar 25 when he was passing through Woodlands Checkpoint. The man had purchased the reptiles from Malaysia to be brought back to his home in Singapore as pets.
He has since been convicted under the Wild Animals and Birds Act for importing alive animals without a permit from the Agri-food and Veterinary Authority.
The reptiles have been sent to Wildlife Reserves Singapore for care and custody.
