A man tried to smuggle in exotic birds from Vietnam into Singapore an inhumane manner, confining them to PVC cylindrical and rectangular tubes and storing them in his luggage.
38-year-old Herman Rahmat has since been sentenced to jail for three months today after he pleaded guilty to importing nine white-rumped shama, two re-whiskered bulbul and a magpie robin without a licence as well as committing animal abuse last November.
Though the 12 birds were found alive and sent for quarantine the day after the discovery, eight of them died within the next two days from cranial trauma with accompanying haemorrhage, swelling and dehydration.
According to The Straits Times, his ploy was uncovered when an Immigration and Checkpoints Authority officer noticed suspicious tube-like images while screening baggages at Changi Airport when Herman arrived.
