A night out at a hotpot restaurant turned into a fiery ordeal when a stove exploded, expelling boiling hot soup everywhere and seriously injuring five people.
Lianhe Wanbao reports that two women suffered third-degree burns after boiling soup splashed on their faces, and were sent to the hospital with three others last Saturday when the incident occurred at an eatery along Beach Road.
One of the victims recounted that the portable stove she was using kept emitting clicking noises and turning off by itself. A waiter later inserted a piece of paper to prevent the stove from automatically turning off.
Everything went fine, but just as she and her friend were leaving, the stove exploded and spewed the hot soup on her face and left arm. Her friend and a woman seating at a nearby table also suffered burns to their faces.
The restaurant owner remarked that it was the first time that such an incident happened, suspecting that the stove's gas canister had been defective. He mentioned that he will be discussing compensation with the victims in hospital.
