ACRES survey reveals strong animal welfare sentiments among SingaporeansDespite the crackdown by the authorities on the population of stray animals littered around this urban jungle, a survey conducted by the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) revealed that only a minority of people in Singapore actually support the culling of animals. Out of 600 Singaporeans, only 14 percent of the respondents agreed to culling stray dogs, while only 13 percent and 14 percent of them agreed to the culling of monkeys and wild pigs respectively. There is also a distinctly strong attitude towards animal welfare, with 52 percent of Singaporeans supporting harsher penalties in regards to possession and smuggling of endangered species. 79 percent agreed that animal protection is important.  Another sensitive topic comes in the form of shark fin's soup — a popular dish in traditional Chinese culture. Though historically perceived as a symbol of wealth, almost half of the respondents (49 percent) agreed that shark fin's consumption should be banned. Photo: Tristan Schmurr via Flickr
