In a horticulturally Singaporean manner, an orchid has been named after late statesman Lee Kuan Yew and presented to son and current Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana today.
According to Channel NewsAsia, the Aranda Lee Kuan Yew took between three and five years to breed and develop, producing blooms bearing up to 10 flowers each. The flower is a hybrid between an orchid native to Singapore and an orchid in the Vanda series.
National Parks Board Board CEO Kenneth Er remarked that the flowering of Aranda Lee Kuan Yew coincided with Lee's passing, and was chosen for a stature and colour that reflected his qualities.
The orchid will be on display at the Parliament House, where Lee's body will lie in state till Saturday.
