Pierre Chng Yuheng, 19, acted like a complete dolt when he took the stand in court last month to face charges of criminal intimidation against his former landlady, unwilling to answer questions by the prosecution, crossing his arms, glaring at the ceiling and demanding a change of court, judge and public prosecutor.
According to The New Paper, it was a wholly different scene yesterday when he was sentenced to seven days in jail for contempt of court, on top of a $4,500 fine for criminal intimidation.
In 2013, the young Chng used a tree branch to threaten his landlady Khoo Kim Cheng, who came to the house with a technician to carry out maintenance. His family had rented part of Khoo's house at Paya Lebar Crescent, but the tenant-landlord relationship soured when the Chng family repeatedly failed to pay the rent.
In court yesterday, Chng — unrepresented by lawyers — was handed an unpleasant surprise with the conviction of contempt of court. Reportedly, he was reduced to tears, a stark contrast from his arrogant conduct in his previous court appearance.
District Judge Lim Keng Yeow asserted that Chng had "scandalised the court" and "adversely affected the administration of justice", stressing that his jail sentence will serve as a warning to others.
