Following a tip-off about the sale of illegal animals in the shop, Wu Hu Aquarium was found to be in possession of illegal wildlife and selling them to customers.
In court, the aquarium shop owner was fined $41,000.
The surprise inspection conducted by the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) uncovered a total of 22 illegal animals at the shop, including sturgeons, paddlefish, newts, clawed frogs and turtles. Two highly endangered tortoises — a ploughshare tortoise and a radiated tortoise — listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) were also found stored in styrofoam boxes at the back of the shop.
Further investigations had also revealed that all the animals were imported into Singapore without relevant import permits.
All the animals have been sent to Wildlife Reserves Singapore.
