A container hiding cartons upon cartons of contraband cigarettes were intercepted by officers of the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) on Tuesday at Woodlands Checkpoint, amounting to $285,800 in the duty and Goods and Service Taxes.
A Malaysia-registered lorry driven by a 38-year-old male with his 23-year-old male attendant was stopped by ICA officers upon arrival at the checkpoint, where their consignment — declared as "assorted plastic parts"— was found with anomalies in the scanned image.
Upon further inspection, officers uncovered 3203 cartons and 979 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes hidden within the consignment at the back of the vehicle.
The two Malaysians, the exhibits and the lorry have been handed over to Singapore Customs for further investigations.
