![49 cases of alleged sex trafficking cases investigated by police last year]()
Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean revealed yesterday that the police have investigated 49 cases of alleged sex trafficking in 2014.
25 of the 49 cases were substantiated — two of which led to the prosecution of 11 offenders — while 18 other cases await court proceedings or require additional investigations. DPM Teo added that five cases did not face court prosecutions.
The 24 of the other 49 cases were deemed not to involve sex trafficking, with 12 cases pending court proceedings or further investigations under the Women’s Charter or Penal Code. The remaining 12 cases were dismissed for not having committed any offences.
The Ministry of Manpower investigated two of 43 alleged cases of labour trafficking in 2014, prosecuting two offenders from two cases in court. DPM Teo added that the remaining 41 cases were determined as not involving labour trafficking, with 29 employment-related altercations avoiding court prosecutions. However, 12 cases are awaiting court processions or additional investigations for violating employment laws.
