The newest addition to popular dining enclave Tras Street is May May. And while competition in the area is stiff, the modern Asian eatery holds its own, with its slick look and smart recipes, against the many notable restaurants on the stretch like French stalwart Brasserie Gavroche and Italian favourite Gattopardo.
It’s undoubtedly a stylish joint. The décor features plenty of white marble, an open kitchen and a nice ceiling window to let in natural light. A wall of green creeper plants makes a stunning centrepiece for the space. A good fit for the CBD neighbourhood, the cosy 40-seater serves up a menu of fresh filling lunches in the day and Asian small plates by night.

Folks looking for a quick work lunch will appreciate the rice bowls (from $12) in variations like grilled miso aubergine and braised pork belly. They’re wholesome but hearty. And for an added $3 you get salad and a drink to round out your meal. There’s locally sourced coffee by Nylon Coffee Roasters (from $3) and tea ($6) from Tea Bone Zen Mind — think pineapple sencha — for a caffeinated pick-me-up.
At dinner, choose from a selection of East-meets-West plates such as confit potatoes with bacon and dashi ($14) and seared wagyu ribeye with seaweed salsa verde ($32). The pretty dishes are perfect for sharing. So the place is suitable for groups, especially if you book up one of their long communal tables. To wash down your meal, throw back easy-drinking Japanese beers (from $10) and sake (from $40).

May May is chic yet convivial. Though the crowd is hip, the place still retains a mellow vibe. It’s a comfortable go-to spot if you’re in the Tanjong Pagar neighbourhood.
May May is at 65 Tras St., 6221-4698. Open Mon-Sat 11am-3:30pm, 6-11pm.
