Nine contractors have been arrested for posing as HDB and Town Council officials who've been going around blocks and swindling elderly residents.
The Consumers Association of Singapore raised the alert about personnel from renovation firm Upgrading General Contractor who have been misleading people into using their services by convincing them that they work for the Town Council. Their con would involve persuading elderly residents about a need for urgent repair and replacement works within their homes, including sewage pipes, leaky ceilings and rubbish chute covers.
Consumers reported that the repair and replacement works performed by the company were either done poorly or not done at all. Seven complaints were lodged against the company.
Officers from Tanglin Police Division conducted an operation on Jan 28 and arrested seven men and two women from the firm. They seized receipt books, company passes and mobile phones as evidence.
If found guilty of committing Cheating by Personation, they may be punished with imprisonment for up to five years and a fine.
HDB advises the public to request identification documents to verify legitimate contractors who're working under them.
