As the prices of cough syrup soar in the black market here, some medical practitioners would have found it really tempting to get into the hustling game. 44-year-old Dr. Ho Thong Chew was one of the several who broke bad, using his position as a doctor to purchase litres upon litres of codeine-laced cough syrup and sold it for massive profits illegally.
With effect from Jan 18 this year, he can no longer practice medicine in Singapore as his name has been removed from the Register of Medical Practitioners, according to the Singapore Medical Council (SMC).
The former doctor pleaded guilty to and was convicted of 12 charges by the SMC's Discplinary Tribunal of selling Dhasedyl Syrup by way of wholesale dealing without a wholesale dealer's license. He was jailed for seven and a half months, and was fined $60,000 in 2012.
SMC's statement about the case published yesterday also revealed that Ho had been suffering from depression, and that he continued to engage in illegal wholesale dealing of cough syrup even after his clinic had been raided by the Health Sciences Authority.
