Just as Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin reported a record low in workplace fatality rates over 2014, a tragic incident struck at a Beach Road worksite two days ago, where the South Beach Project is being built.
27-year-old Indian national Sowndarajan Santhoshkumar plunged to his death from the sixth storey of the building when the beam he attached his safety harness to fell, pulling him along, The New Paper reports.
Reportedly, his body was left suspended two storeys above ground.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force was alerted to the incident at 5.45, deploying paramedics and the Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART) to the site. DART officers conducted an hour-long operation to bring the body down to the ground, where paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
The Ministry of Manpower has issued a stop-work order at the construction site, while their Occupational Safety and Health Inspectorate examine the premises.
