In a bizarre case of domestic disturbance in Clementi on Wednesday, the police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) had to be called in to calm down an aggressive man, who went through the whole ordeal in the nude.
The troubles began early on at 8pm, when the residents near Block 606 along Clementi West Street 1 heard a heated exchange inside a unit, and did not let up for the next four hours, The New Paper reports.
The shoutings, loud quarrels and the sound of things breaking was heard from inside the flat since Monday and could even be heard from the coffee shop downstairs. It was only at 11.30pm on that fateful Wednesday night that a neighbour yelled at the flat in frustration, resulting in one of the occupants calling out for help from the window.
According to that frustrated neighbour, a couple and their grown-up son and daughter had been residents of the flat for over 10 years. Other residents in the area who spoke to The New Paper mentioned that the 26-year-old son was a particularly persistent and eccentric nuisance in the neighbourhood. He would annoy others by doing things such as blow his lorry's exhaust pipe at people sitting at the coffee shop and rev up his Nissan Skyline harshly in the middle of the night. One time, he even stole a doll from his neighbour, hugged it and ran to the next block to hide. What a weirdo.
During the ordeal on Wednesday night, he had thrown a brass figurine at his mother, hitting her on the head. Once the police arrived to attend to the case, the son locked himself in the bedroom and threatened to jump down.
With that, the SCDF Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART) were called in to prevent him from doing anything drastic. As the rescuers set up the safety net and rappelling equipment, residents across the block saw that he was pacing around in the room, stark naked.
The DART personnel then rappelled down to the window of the unit and surprised the man, who went to close his windows to prevent them from entering the bedroom. Meanwhile, a second team of SCDF and police officers conducted forcible entry into the room and apprehended him when his back was turned.
The whole thing was over at 1.30am, with the man bundled up in a white towel and wheeled away to an ambulance.
Upon discharge from the hospital, the police have since arrested the troubled man for voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous means and are conducting further investigations.
