Six metric tonnes of marine gas oil worth $4,000 had been illicitly sold off by crew members of a foreign-registered tugboat off the Pandan River.
Investigations revealed that seven foreign nationals — all crewman of foreign registered tugboat Tenaga Maju had conducted the transaction at sea on Jan 23, selling the marine gas oil to five crew of another foreign registered tugboat TB Nerine.
Police Coast Guard officers have since arrested the twelve men, aged between 19 to 62, for suspected involvement in a case of Criminal Breach of Trust. The tugboat TB Nerine and cash amounting to $2,760 were seized as evidence.
If convicted, they may be punished with up to 15 years in jail and a fine.
