An elderly man was at the receiving end of an unwanted suicide rescue on Wednesday when a neighbour saw him standing on the ledge outside his flat on the 10th storey.
According to The New Paper, officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) forced their way into his flat at Block 408, Tampines Street 41 and pulled him to safety through the window. His little stunt resulted in the deployment of two fire engines, a support vehicle and an ambulance to his residential block.
The SCDF was alerted to a distress call by a resident living in the opposite block who spotted the elderly man standing on the ledge and gripping the window grilles, initially mistaking it as a suicide attempt. At closer inspection however, the caller grew concerned about the safety of the man on the ledge, as he seemed unable to lift himself back into his flat on his own. The authorities were then called.
The elderly man however seems unfazed by the commotion caused by his actions. Speaking to The New Paper yesterday, he maintained that he had done so a couple of times before to fix his window grilles and that he didn't need to be rescued.
The man however doesn't blame the resident for calling the police on him as his concerned neighbour was "just being kind-hearted".
