A National University of Singapore law professor is getting a lesson of his own in the legal practice — he is being put on trial for assaulting a taxi driver.
43-year-old Sundram Peter Soosay allegedly punched 69-year-old cabbie Sun Chuan Hua two years go in the wee hours of Christmas Day around 5am in the vicinity of the former King Albert Park, TODAY reports.
In court yesterday, Sun details the encounter. A clearly tipsy Soosay boarded his taxi and headed for Clementi Road. Nearing King Alber Park, his passenger vomited in the cab and had to get off the taxi to sit at a bus stop for a moment.
Soosay walked away from the area without paying the taxi driver. Sun then threatened to call the police as his attempts to call out to the passenger was ignored. Soosay then handed over a $50 bill.
On the way back to the taxi to get some change, Sun was hit from the back and slammed his head on the ground, resulting in a bloody forehead. Soosay continued to assault the taxi driver, pressing him onto the ground and punching his face and eyes repeatedly.
A passer-by witnessed the scuffle and intervened, calling an ambulance for Sun. The witness, 21-year-old Matthew Auw took the stand as well yesterday and remarked that he intervened as Sun did not seem capable of defending himself.
The assault left Sun with seven stitches to his forehand as well as grazes to his left arm and knees. He had to go on medical leave for 17 days as the injuries left him unable to lift his left arm.
The trial will continue on Feb 5.
