Man dealt with record-high fine of over $19k for high-rise litteringLitterbugs usually get off with a warning, a couple hours of corrective work order or a fine, but never would anyone imagine forking out a five-digit sum for the offence.  A 38-year-old man living at 224C Compassvale Walk just broke the national record for the highest amount of fine received for his persistent high-rise littering — $19,800.  According to the National Environment Agency (NEA), the man committed 34 acts of high-rise littering by repeatedly throwing cigarette butts out of his home. Despite repeated educational rounds conducted by Town Council officers and stake-outs by NEA officers, the issue continued to persist. A surveillance camera was installed soon after, and caught him in the act 34 times between March 13 and March 16 last year.  Residents informed The New Paper about the particularly problematic issue of high-rise littering in the area, with many experiencing cigarette burns and layers of ashes on the clothes being left out to dry on bamboo poles outside. Adding salt to his already blistering financial wound, the insistent litterbug has also been sentenced to five hours of Corrective Work Order.  Photo: NEA Newsroom
