Over the past few weeks, the police received several reports from victims who were duped into paying 'fees' to a conman who promised them attractive job opportunities.
A 36-year-old man had been involved at least four cases of cheating island-wide, posing as a freelance agent and offering various jobs with high salaries in Singapore. The catch: pay a deposit ranging from $1,000 to $2,000 to secure employment. He became uncontactable as soon as he received the payments.
Through extensive follow-up investigations, officers from the Ang Mo Kio Police Division managed to establish his identity and arrested him in Ang Mo Kio.
If convicted of cheating, he will face a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine.
