The Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) will return to Singapore after 22 years on Jun. 5, and the organising committee plans to celebrate with a spectacular Opening Ceremony at the National Stadium. Close to 5,000 performers and volunteers, and 3,500 soldiers will participate in the event with highlights including a high-definition floor projection created with 160 multimedia projectors, an audience interaction system which uses LED medallions to form a giant video screen in the stands, and an extensive aerial performance system. It promises to be a record-breaking extravaganza that ties in with Singapore’s Golden Jubilee celebrations.
The details were revealed on Jan. 15 by Singapore SEA Games Organising Committee Executive Committee (SINGSOC EXCO) Chairman Lim Teck Yin, Opening and Closing Ceremonies (OCC) Chairman COL Lawrence Lim and Creative Director, Show-OCC, Beatrice Chia-Richmond.
Just as they did at the 1993 Games, the Singapore Artillery is helming proceedings – COL Lim being the Chief Artillery Officer. Chia-Richmond, who served as Creative Director of the National Day Parade in 2011, is backed by an all-star creative team which features Technical Director Kenny Wong, Music Director Dr. Sydney Tan, Writer/Co-Conceptualiser Haresh Sharma and Multimedia Designer Brian Gothong Tan.
The Opening Ceremony consists of three segments: audience interaction, ceremonial proceedings and the Show. The Show itself is made up of five acts entitled “DNA”, “Imagination”, “Youth Expression”, “Sports in the City” and “Singapore in the Stadium”. Shigga Shay, Tay Kewei, Gayle Nerva, Tabitha Nauser and Daphne Khoo are among the headliners while Sharon Au, Gurmit Singh and Nikki Muller will take on hosting duties.
Priority sales for tickets are now on with public sales opening on Jan. 22. Standard tickets are priced between $12 and $60 for the Opening Ceremony and between $12 and $40 for the Closing Ceremony. A 20 percent discount is available for group bookings of four or more tickets. For more information, head the SEA Games website.
