Frustrated over the millions of Ringgit in unpaid fines — mostly perpetrated by Singaporean motorists — Malaysian traffic police conducted a six-day operation near the Johor Baru immigration checkpoint to collect the fees owed to them.
Conducted from Dec 27 to Jan 1, the operation netted 13,529 drivers and over RM2.4 million in outstanding traffic fines, the Straits Times reports.
Speaking to the paper, Johor Traffic Police Chief Baharudin Mat Taib assured that though the sting operations will continue to be conducted regularly, they are not specifically targeting Singaporeans. He remarks that the operation will target all errant motorists, including Malaysians.
The Straits Times noted that the next crackdown is likely to take place during the Chinese New Year period next month, a time when many Singaporeans will be crossing over the border for the holidays.
Some Singaporeans have expressed surprise over the sudden clampdown; most of them not even remembering making the offences said to have occurred years ago.
