15 years' imprisonment and maximum caning sentence for man who raped joggerAn evening jog in Bukit Batok Neighbourhood Park went horribly wrong for a 47-year-old woman who was dragged off the running track and subsequently raped.  The New Paper reports that 41-year-old steelwork supervisor Sinnathamby Ramiah had spotted her jogging along the park's track, where he was consuming beer in August 2013. Feeling sexually aroused, he stalked her movements while pretending to perform leg-stretching exercises before snatching her from behind and pull her away from the running track. With some cable ties he brought along with him to repair his motorcycle cover, he created a makeshift cord and used them to restrain the woman and dragged her off to a secluded area. Even as she begged him for release, Ramiah threatened to kill her if she screamed, and proceeded to rape her.  He fled the scene with her mobile phone after the assault ended. The woman managed to stumble home before immediatly lodging a police report at the Jurong Police Division Headquarters, preserving the panty liner and the running shorts she wore to assist police investigations.  Several days later, the police established the rapist's identity when he tried to access the woman's mobile phone and arrested him on Sept 10.  In court last Friday, he was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment and received the maximum 24 strokes of the cane. Two counts of insulting the modesty of a teenager, also in 2013, were also taken into consideration.  Photo: Don DeBold via Flickr
