One of Singapore’s oldest playgrounds will not be demolished unlike the four HDB blocks surrounding it which will be torn down over the next few months, according to media reports.
The playground at Lorong 6 Toa Payoh features a colourful structure in a shape of a dragon, and HDB says it will remain in its original location pending future development plans for the area.
Residents of the surrounding Blocks 28, 30, 32 and 33 moved out in 2008 after it was chosen for the Selective En Bloc Redevelopment Scheme (SERS) in 2003. Demolition works for the four blocks are expected to be done by mid-2015, but the playground will still be accessible to the public.
It was designed by former HDB interior designer Khor Ean Ghee, and was likely constructed in the 1970s.
The upcoming Toa Payoh Apex, a Built-To-Order (BTO) project launched in July 2014 and slated to be ready in 2018, is located near the playground.
