Officers from the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) conducted an inland enforcement operation at Geylang yesterday, managing to nab a total of 18 overstayers.
The immigration offenders were Chinese and Vietnamese nationals, comprising of 17 males and a female of ages between 35 and 51 years old. Investigations on them are currently ongoing.
Overstaying is considered a serious offence, possessing similar penalties for illegal entry — a jail term of up to six months and at least three strokes of the cane.
Homeowners and landlords are advised to check the status of their prospective foreign tenants to ensure that they are legal immigrants.
