In a world where computers, processors and webpages are increasingly becoming an essential part of our lives, computer coding has become a truly valuable element in the modern man's skillset.
As such, the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) has put plans into motion that should see 32,000 students in Singapore to be familiar with basic coding by 2016.
Channel NewsAsia reports that software programming lessons were offered in primary and secondary schools last year, with Temasek Primary School leading the venture by offering coding lessons as early as five years ago through a collaboration with Singapore Polytechnic. 1,500 Temasek Primary School students now possess basic knowledge of computer and robot programming.
The push for coding lessons for young students is an increasingly widespread sentiment shared by educators worldwide — unsurprisingly due to the fact that the people behind the biggest companies today including Facebook, Dropbox and Valve all got to where they are with coding. Even Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am is getting on the coding bandwagon. Seriously:
IDA has declared that they are working on introducing the programmes to more schools.
